Ayahuasca FAQ
🌿 Ayahuasca FAQ: What to Know Before, During, and After Ceremony
Whether you're preparing for your first ceremony or seeking to deepen your understanding, this FAQ answers common questions about the Ayahuasca experience—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Our intention is to support your journey with grounded, compassionate, and practical guidance.
🔸 What is Ayahuasca?
Ayahuasca is a sacred plant medicine from the Amazon, traditionally used by Indigenous communities for spiritual, emotional, and physical healing. It is brewed from two plants: the Banisteriopsis caapi vine and the leaves of Psychotria viridis (or other DMT-containing plants). Together, they create a powerful psychedelic experience that allows deep introspection, healing, and connection with spirit.
🔸 What are the potential benefits?
Research and personal experience point to a wide range of possible benefits:
Neurogenesis – May help stimulate the growth of new neural connections.
Mental Health Support – Breakthroughs in depression, anxiety, PTSD, and grief.
Addiction Treatment – Used to address substance abuse and emotional dependencies.
Spiritual Growth – A sense of unity, interconnectedness, and inner knowing.
Emotional Release – Crying, shaking, or vocal release of stored trauma.
Perspective Shift – Old patterns dissolve; clarity and compassion emerge.
Travis’s Note:
I’ve seen all of these benefits unfold in myself and others—sometimes with deep grace, sometimes like a cosmic firehose. What’s humbling is realizing healing doesn’t always look how you expect it to. Stay open.
🧪 Scientific Highlights
Here’s what the research says about Ayahuasca’s potential:
A 2018 study of 29 people with treatment-resistant depression found that a single dose led to significant improvements in depression severity.
Another 2018 study with 57 participants showed depression and stress decreased immediately, with effects lasting 4 weeks.

A small 2018 study of 20 participants found that weekly Ayahuasca sessions for 4 weeks were as effective as an 8-week mindfulness program in improving acceptance.
A 2016 review of 6 studies suggested it may support depression, anxiety, mood disorders, and substance dependence.

A 2013 study involving 12 people found increased mindfulness, empowerment, and reduced substance use at 6 months.

Note: While results are promising, many studies are small or early-phase. More research is needed to confirm long-term outcomes.
🔸 What Physical Effects Can I Expect?
Common responses include:
Purging – Vomiting, diarrhea, yawning, burping, or sweating.
Nausea – Especially early in the night.
Body sensations – Tingling, shaking, heaviness, temperature shifts.
Energy changes – Fatigue or bursts of energy.
Travis’s Note:
I used to dread the purge. Now I sometimes feel grateful when it comes. It’s as if the body is saying, “You don’t have to carry this anymore.”
🔸 Is purging required for healing?
No. Some people purge heavily. Some don’t purge at all. Both are valid.
Travis’s Note:
One of my most profound nights had no purge at all—just stillness and insight. Trust your experience, not someone else’s benchmark
🔸 What if the experience becomes too intense?
Breath deeply
Surrender
Ask the medicine for a different experience
Trust the process
Ask for support if needed
Travis’s Note:
Ayahuasca is a relationship. You can talk to her. I’ve asked for gentleness, clarity, or a different rhythm—and often, the experience shifts within minutes.
🔸 How should I prepare?
Diet (La Dieta) – Light, clean, and plant-based. Avoid pork, alcohol, caffeine, processed sugar, and sex.
Mental – Reflect, journal, meditate. Know your intention.
Medical – Disclose all medications and conditions honestly.
Schedule – Leave spaciousness before and after.
Travis’s Note:
The ceremony begins long before the first cup. When I respect the dieta and create stillness ahead of time, the experience is deeper and steadier.
🔸 What are common themes or insights?
Childhood or ancestral healing
Messages through feeling or vision
Connection to family, nature, or spirit
Letting go of fear, guilt, shame
Deep emotional catharsis
Travis’s Note:
Ayahuasca speaks in metaphor, image, sensation, and feeling. I’ve seen life through my child’s eyes, spoken to my dad who passed years ago, and once became a dancing snake who could sense the light and shadow in any question. Don’t rush to decode the meaning—just let it land.
🔸 Is Ayahuasca right for everyone?
Not always. It’s not recommended for people with certain mental health conditions or medications. Always consult your facilitator and be honest.
Travis’s Note:
Sometimes the medicine doesn’t call—or says “not now.” That’s okay too. Trust the timing. That’s the path.
🔸 How long does the experience last?
Typically 4–6 hours, sometimes longer. Effects usually begin 30–90 minutes after drinking.
Travis’s Note:
It’s different every time. For me, it often starts with little green lights. During ceremony, a second or third cup might be offered. Sometimes I’ve said yes. Sometimes I’ve known I was done. Listen to yourself.
🔸 What is integration, and why is it important?
Integration is how you carry the experience into your life:
Journaling or voice notes
Meditation, movement, or nature time
Support groups, therapy, or coaching
New boundaries or lifestyle shifts
Travis’s Note:
I’ve seen people have massive ceremonies and change nothing. I’ve also seen one message reshape someone’s life. The medicine plants the seed. Integration is how you grow it.
